What is Engine, and who is it for?

Engine is an immersive and interactive work experience training programme for secondary school pupils. Engine is a complete course that pupils can work through in their own time, or under direction from school staff, that takes them through all elements of being a civil and structural engineer.

By the end of the course, students will know the ins-and-outs of the various roles undertaken by civil and structural engineers, why they are important, and how they are a vital part of the construction and development industry.

Students! Take the Engine challenge!

As part of your online work experience you will learn the nature and importance of seven key focus points that together compile the full role of civil and structural engineers. Along the way, you will learn the aspects and responsibilities of each focus point, have the opportunity to demonstrate what you have learned in each section, and test your overall knowledge in an interactive quiz.

Engine also asks you to think about the world of work and what you might want to do when you leave school, and at the end you will be able to download your completed workbook with all your answers as a permanent record of your achievements on the training course. You’ll even receive a certificate!

Teachers! Engine for enriching work experience

While some civil and structural engineering work takes place on site, much of the work takes place in offices using compter software and research. With so many different activities involved, students will experience what it’s like to to be getting muddy on a construction site, being a detective to find out about how the land has been used in the past, and advising other professionals involved with construction projects on the best way to plan and build new structures.

Best of all, it’s free to sign up and take part! For more information about the course, see What’s Inside?
