Work through the sections

Engine is divided into easy-to-follow sections starting with a more in-depth explanation about Engine and the Alan Johnson Partnership. You will find out an overview of what civil and structural engineering is and also what you will learn as you work your way through the course.

From there, you will experience seven very different focus points that go into detail about the different roles required to being a civil and structural engineer.

Learn in-depth knowledge

Each focus point will give you the opportunity to learn about the knowledge, skills, activities, and know-how required to complete the job. This highly visual and interactive work experience course will give you a deep understanding of civil and structural engineering and how varied each area of the job can be.

You’ll learn about getting dirty on site when helping construction professionals with building foundations and drainage solutions, and the fascinating detective work when discovering how the land has been used in the past and planning how land should be used in the future.

Take the challenges

At the beginning of each focus point, you will be shown what the learning objectives will be during the module. As you work through the focus points, such as site investigations, analysing flood risks, determining what buildings are used for, and choosing suitable building materials, you will have the opportunity to answer questions about what you have learned.

All your written answers will be included in a downloadable workbook which is available right at the end of the course. This download is a complete record of all the focus points you have studied. You’ll even get a certificate!

What have you learned? Take the quiz!

As part of each focus point you will be able to take a quick quiz to test your knowledge for that section. Some questions are easy, but some are tricky!

Can you get them all correct? Many try, but many fail!

Section summaries and conclusions

To round things off nice and tidily, each focus point has a summary right at the end. Here, we will revisit the learning objectives we saw at the beginning. Each objective has an explanation of what you should have learned. But, don’t try and whizz on! You must complete each section in order before you can move on to the next! Aren’t we mean, eh?!
